Originally, the city was named "Moose Jaw Bone Creek" by John Palliser in 1857. There are two common theories regarding how Palliser chose a name. The first theory is that, when looking at a map, the shape of the Moose Jaw River resembles the jaw of a moose. The second is that the name is derived from the Plains Cree name "moscastani-sipiy", which translates to "a warm place by the river." The Coteau Range protects the river valley from the weather conditions. The Plains Cree word Moose Jaw translates to "warm breezes".
Though Moose Jaw is largely an industrial centre, Canada's military air show flight demonstration team, the Snowbirds, is located in the municipality.
