 Sweeper Parts Sudbury - Sudbury City is situated within Northern Ontario, and is the most heavily populated city in the region, with more than 157,000 individuals. The area of Greater Sudbury is a municipality which was just recently created. In 2001, the cities and towns of the former Regional Municipality of Sudbury, and some previously unincorporated geographic townships, merged to become Greater Sudbury. By land area, it is the largest city within Ontario, and the 7th biggest municipality by area within the country.
Greater Sudbury constitutes its own independent census division, and is not part of whichever district, county or regional municipality. Just four other cities within Ontario have this status: Toronto, Ottawa, Hamilton and Kawartha Lakes.
As a mining and mill town, Sudbury has a colourful labour history. During the year 1944, the city's mine workers succeeded in making a union with the certification of the Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers Local 598. Two companies, Inco and Falconbridge, tried to destabilize the union by setting up their very own puppet unions, the United Copper Nickel Union which the workers referred to as "Nickel Rash" and the Falconbridge Workers Council. The workers rejected these puppet unions. The very first mine workers' strike happened during 1958 following many years of unrest. Smaller strikes likewise took place during the late 1960s.
Despite the presence of big nickel deposits in the area, the city has had difficulties reaping economic benefits because of taxation problems. Prior to the creation of the Regional Municipality of Sudbury in the year 1973, the city was not permitted to levy taxes against the mining businesses, whose facilities were situated within outlying company towns, like for example Coniston, Copper Cliff, Falconbridge and Frood Mine. Sudbury tried to solve the issue by annexing the company towns, but the Ontario Municipal Board always denied the city's requests.
The ability of Sudbury to directly levy municipal taxes on mining companies has been limited when compared to other Ontario cities, whose main employers operate in other businesses. One local newspaper called the city of Sudbury "a city without a city's birthright," due to its taxation problems. Nonetheless, mining remains an essential business in the city of Sudbury.
Despite challenges, Sudbury City has managed to diversify its economy, developing as a centre of commerce, government, tourism and research. The Vale nickel mine has long been the Sudbury City's largest single company. Nonetheless, the proportion of residents hired by Vale has declined from 25% in the 1970s to less than five percent of the city's workforce these days. The mining business is now outranked by education, health care, public administration, hospitality services, retail trade and mining machine manufacturing.
Sudbury City has also face a lot of labour problems. For example, there was a recent strike at Vale lasted from the summer of 2009 to the summer of the year 2010. These problems have has less of an effect on the general financial system as opposed to the past years.
