One of the major economic drivers of the area throughout the 19th and 20th centuries has been the Sydney Coal Field, that is the home of the islands two main coal deposits. The 2nd largest urban community on the Island is Glace Bay. Glace Bay remained the island's major coal mining centre until the 1980's. Tourism is also a lucrative trade particularly during the post-Second World War. Whale-watching, the Celtic Colours Festival, and the promotions of the Gaelic College of Celtic Arts and Crafts are among the most well-known tourist attractions in the region.
