The economy of the city is the second largest within Canada based on GDP and is the biggest in the province. Nowadays Montreal is considered an extremely inhabitable city. It is a centre of aerospace, commerce, finance, pharmaceuticals, global affairs and technology and is the headquarters of the Montreal Exchange. It is a leader in design, culture and film. Tourism is a vital industry.

The city of Toronto ranked 12th. Montreal has also been named North America's number one city by the International Congress and Convention Association (also referred to as ICCA).
Montreal is one of the biggest providers of aerospace jobs in North America. Significant industries consist of engineering, aerospace, electronic goods, pharmaceuticals, textile and apparel manufacturing, printed goods, software telecommunications, tobacco and transportation. Finance, research and development and the higher education sectors also contribute significantly to the economy of the city.
