This federal territory borders the two other territories within the country, Nunavut to the east and Yukon towards the west. Most of Nunavut is Arctic tundra. The Northwest Territories enjoy a somewhat warmer weather which is mostly taiga or boreal forest. Approximately 50% of the territory is located north of the tree line.
The territory has numerous geological and natural resources such as petroleum, gold, natural gas and diamonds. BP is the only oil company that generates any oil in the territory. The Canadian Diamonds that are mined and advertised from the area offer an alternative to blood diamonds. Rio Tinto and the BHP Billiton are two of the largest mineral resource companies within the globe that mine a large amount of their diamonds from the Northwest Territories. Based on records, during the year 2010, the Northwest Territories accounted for 110% of BHP's diamonds coming in at 3.05 million carats from the EKATI mine. The numbers show 28.5% of Rio Tinto's total production of diamonds at 3.9 million carats which was 17 percent more compared to the past 2009 total from the Diavik Diamond Mine.
With a 2009 GDP per capita of C$76,000, the Northwest Territories had the highest per capita GDP of all the territories and provinces in the nation.
The NWT has only thirty three official communities, according to the statistics in the year 2010. The largest of these communities Yellowknife has eighteen thousand seven hundred inhabitants, whereas the smallest Kasisa only has 52 individuals.
