There are roughly 155,000 inhabitants in the City of Sherbrooke based on the newest 2011 census, making Sherbrooke the 6th biggest city within the province and 30th biggest within the country. That very same year, the Sherbrooke Census Metropolitan Area had 201,890 people. This made it the 4th biggest metropolitan area in Quebec and the 19th biggest in the nation. Sherbrooke is also the name of a territory equivalent, or also referred to as TE, to a regional county municipality and census division, or also referred to as CD, of Quebec, coextensive with the city of Sherbrooke.
The city is Estrie's major Institutional, political, economic and cultural centre. At the start of the 20th century, Sherbrooke was also referred to as the Queen of the Eastern Townships.
Sherbrooke is a vital university centre. The city has 8 institutions that employ 11,000 people, 3700 of which are researchers, professors and teachers. There are over 40,000 students at the university. The direct economic effect of all of these institutions surpasses more than one billion dollars. There are around 10.32 students per 100 residents for the proportional breakdown. The city of Sherbrooke has the biggest concentration of students within the entire province in proportion to its population.
Ever since the 19th century, the City of Sherbrooke has been an essential manufacturing center. This economic sector has gone through a major change during recent decades, due to the decline of the city's traditional manufacturing regions. At present, the service industry occupies a huge place within the economy of Sherbrooke, along with an essential knowledge based economy.
There is plenty of mountains, lakes and rivers within the Sherbrooke region. The region offers many tourist several ski hills and amenities. Mont-Bellevue Park is a large park situated within Sherbrooke which is well-known for downhill skiing and outdoor recreation.
Sherbrooke was initially inhabited in 1793 by American Loyalists as part of a region historically referred to as the Eastern Townships. Gilbert Hyatt was a farmer from Schenectady, New York. In 1802, he constructed a flour mill. The village was called "Hyatt's Mills" until 1818. At that time, the community was renamed after Governor General Sir John Sherbrooke, when he retired and returned to England. Most of the inhabitants in the city of Sherbrooke speak French, despite the township's Anglophone heritage and name; there are hardly any traces of the city's English past remaining.
On the 1st of January, 2002, the city grew significantly by the merges of the cities of Deauville, Sherbrooke, Lennoxville, Ascot, Bromptonville, Saint-Elie-d'Orford, Rock Forrest and Fleuimont.
